Should I switch accounting software for MTD for Income Tax?

Do not switch merely because MTD is approaching. First establish whether your existing software supports the required MTD for Income Tax workflow for your circumstances.

Quick answer

Check compatibility first. Switch only if your current software cannot meet the requirement or another product gives you a clear operational advantage.

Stay if…

your current software is suitable for your MTD for Income Tax obligations and the bookkeeping process already works reliably.

Switch if…

the current product will not support the required workflow, or the change fixes a separate material accounting problem as well as MTD.

Unsure?

Check HMRC's software guidance and ask your current vendor exactly which MTD for Income Tax functions your plan supports.

Why switching can be the wrong first move

Compliance is a requirement; migration is a separate decision.

A switch can involve opening balances, bank feeds, invoice templates, integrations, accountant access, historic data and retraining. If the existing product supports your required MTD workflow, that disruption needs another reason to be worthwhile.

What to do instead

Confirm your current product and plan before shopping.

This is cheaper and easier than migrating first and discovering later that the existing software was already suitable. Check the vendor's MTD for Income Tax guidance, then confirm with your accountant if your tax situation is more complex.
